While in Fukushima...

the fear of a meltdown is growing

Greece still relies on "safer" forms of energy like the power plants of Ptolemaida that burn lignite

whose gas emissions have been killing people for decades (link in Greek) in a much more discreet manner.

Athens Pride 2010 - the colorful parade

If you like taking photos in full color, then the Athens Pride is just the right event for you.

Large numbers of people took part in the Pride parade, "a powerful display of difference and acceptance".

Ordinary people took the streets

while the most extravagant of them were moving on wheels!

Lets meet a few of the colorful characters:

At some point the parade passed in front of the Greek parliament

which offered some great photo opportunities

and boosted the participants' spirits even more!

Back to some great performances on the vehicles

These people really know how to strike a pose!

Best performer by far, the sailor, who made every photographer around him very happy!

It was one of the few demonstrations where you could see people enjoying themselves,

one of the few demonstrations that brought so many colors together!

Thessaloniki protests

By tradition, every September Thessaloniki hosts an international trade fair, one of the few remaining fairs in the western world that are not targeted to a specific business sector. So let's say Thessaloniki hosts a fair of general interest.

In addition to the fair, Thessaloniki hosts by tradition every year anti-governmental protests that take place on the day the Greek prime minister makes his annual speech on the opening day of the fair.

By tradition, protesters swarm in Thessaloniki's city center in large numbers, but in different blocks.

By tradition, leftists, anarchists, gay anarchists, workers, greens, communists, public sector employees, unions... each have their own meeting points and march individually.

By tradition, these people protest for a range of different things. Others demand better pays, less working hours, while others demand the withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan!

Here some firemen confronting some policemen. Kind of sweet.

And here is a scent of December.

It goes without saying that - by tradition - police is blocking all access to cars during this turbulent evening,

which makes the city center a paradise for us cyclists!

It takes a lot of effort for a car-free Thessaloniki.

But maybe it's worth it!

Thessaloniki bike protest

Today lots of people, in many cities around Greece, took part in a protest for safer and more human commuting conditions in our cities.

It was a peaceful, colorful protest, on bicycle wheels.

Gathering up at the meeting point,

a mixture of amateur and more experienced bicycle riders.

As soon as we started moving, the numbers of the participants kept growing

and growing.

More than an hour later, the scheduled tour around the city was concluded

and everyone got a well-deserved rest on the lawns of the White Tower.
